End of the Quarter
This Friday is the end of the first quarter. Please be sure to complete and turn in all missing work. If you have questions, ask. I am available before school, during lunch and most days after school. Law students must pass the vocabulary test with a score of 70% or higher. If you need help studying, you can log on to Quia using the password you were given in class. English students will be starting the Kansas writing strategies this week. Biology students will be tested on their knowledge and ability to use the microscopes on Friday. We will then continue the study of cell parts and processes. Earth Science will be studying oil spills and their affects on the environment.

Happy Fall
Sunrise Lake Day was a great success, and now we are going to apply that confidence to our academics. In Law we just finished the Chapter 1 test, and are studying about how laws are written. In English, we are finishing up our short stories unit and will start focusing on our writing skills next week. Biology will complete the graphing quiz on Thursday, then we will start our unit on cells. Earth Science students are starting their powerpoints today about alternative energy resources. Keep working on using PPC throughout the day!!

We are Rolling
We have had a great start to the school year. In Law, we are discussing laws, values, and human rights. In English, we are reading The Most Dangerous Game and writing our own sequel. Biology class is applying the steps of the scientific method to solve problems. Earth Science class just completed the introductory chapter and is starting to research alternatives to fossil fuels. Next week the students will start creating a powerpoint to present to the class. Next Tuesday and Thursday we have early dismissal days. Thursday night is Open House. Come join us and see all that is happening at Academy South!

In English we are starting Romeo and Juliet. Be sure to highlight your part and be prepared to read it in class. In Biology, make corrections on your digestive system test, then we are starting the circulatory system. In Earth Science, we are starting the atmosphere in motion.

April 4-13
No School on Friday April 6th or Monday April 9th. In English we are working on our MELcon paragraphs. By the end of next week you'll have more confidence in your paragraph writing!! In Biology we will be continuing our study of digestion, including completing a writing assignment taking the perspective of cheeseburger going through the digestive system. In Earth Science we will finish our study or earthquakes. Then, we will create a structure and see how it withstands an earthquake.

This is the last week of the quarter so please complete all of your make up work! Tuesday is Sunrise Lake Day so dress for the weather, wear closed toed shoes, and no jewelry. In English, we will finish watching the movie and write our final essay for To Kill A Mockingbird. In Biology, digestion is the focus this week. In Earth Science, we are presenting the last volcano resume and starting the study of earthquakes. Have a safe spring break!! See you back at school on April 2nd.

Can you believe it's already the middle of third quarter? After acting out the court scene last week, we will continue to read To Kill A Mockingbird. Keep looking for themes as we read! In Biology, we are finishing up genetics and will be starting nutrition. Earth Science will be creating a powerpoint this week to complete our study of volcanoes.

In English we will continue to read To Kill A Mockingbird and complete the themes, story map, comprehension questions, and facebook postings. As a whole, the class did poorly on the first genetics quiz. This week we will review the quiz and start learning about incomplete dominance and sex linked traits. Earth Science class is beginning the study of Earthquakes.

Welcome to second semester!! It's a fresh start for all!! In English, after completing our individual "State of the Union" paragraphs, we will be creating our collages, then jumping back into To Kill a Mockingbird. In Biology, we are going to continue the study of heredity including creating Alien Babies and completing Punnett Squares. Earth Science will be spending the next couple weeks studying plate tectonics, including a fun hands on lab and an excellent video. Don't forget to fill out your assignment notebooks daily!!
